Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 20 – Japanese prime minister Kishida Fumio pays an official visit to Cambodia from 20-21 March 2022.

According to Japanese Embassy, Kishida Fumio wrote a message to the Cambodian people.

“Cambodia has achieved strong economic development since having full peace," wrote Kishida Fumio.

“I would like to take this opportunity to pay respect to the Cambodian people for their efforts so far. During this time, the cooperation between our two countries has deepened in all fields, while the situation in the world is getting more complicated. Therefore, in order for Japan and Cambodia to continue to grow together, I decided to come to visit Cambodia for the following two purposes,” he underlined.

“The first purpose is to further strengthen Japan-Cambodia relations. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the deployment of Japanese peacekeeping operations (PKO) for the first time in Cambodia. Japan has joined Cambodia in seeking peace, rehabilitation and subsequent economic development.”

“Japan, for example, has been providing demining support for many years through the provision of equipment and dispatch of experts and support in a sustainable water supply in Phnom Penh. Recently, Japan provided about 1.3 million doses of vaccines and a total of 45 billion yen in concessional loans to support the Cambodian government measures against COVID19. In addition, we plan to support the development of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, which is a key pillar of Cambodia's economic development.”

“I believe that these cooperation has led to a deep trust between the governments and peoples of the two countries. Today, based on our trustful relations, I will have a detailed discussion with Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen on economic and security cooperation to further develop the relationship between the two countries.”

Kishida continued, “The second purpose is to strengthen cooperation in international and regional affairs, including the Ukraine and Myanmar issues. The international community is currently facing a world-shaking situation. Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a clear violation of international law and certainly unacceptable. At the emergency session of the General Assembly, Japan and Cambodia have joined together as co-sponsors to adopt a resolution demanding the Russian Federation to immediately end its invasion of Ukraine; and have deplored the Russia’s aggression against Ukraine in violation of the Charter of the United Nations.”

“Prime minister Hun Sen told me that as the chair of ASEAN, Cambodia is committed to resolving issues such as the situation in Myanmar. I understand that from the experience of the civil war, the Cambodian people have a special attitude towards peace. Therefore, I intend to work with the Cambodian government to safeguard peace and stability in the region and the world.”

“The year 2023 marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Cambodia,” Kishida added.
