Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 6 – Cambodian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Chum Sounry told Fresh News late Sunday that Myanmar’s senior general Min Aung Hlaing has given his assurances to Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen that he will reconsider the case of the detained Australian professor in Myanmar once the judiciary process is over.

“During the talks with senior general Min Aung Hlaing, Cambodian premier has raised the case of professor Sean Turnell as requested by Australian foreign minister and the general has given his assurance that he will reconsider the case once the judiciary process is over,” Sounry said.

The spokesperson added, “The ASEAN Chair’s special envoy, Cambodian foreign minister Prak Sokhonn hopes that senior general Min Aung Hlaing will honor his assurance with Samdech Techo.”

During Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen’s visit to Myanmar on 7-8 January 2022, the premier conveyed the Australia’s request to Myanmar regarding the detention of an Australian professor in Myanmar and Myanmar’s senior general Min Aung Hlaing accepted the premier's request in a positive manner.

The Australian government has demanded the "immediate release" of a professor who has been jailed in Myanmar for a year and now faces a 14-year prison term.
