Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 29 – At the invitation of president of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Mona Juul this month, Cambodian foreign minister Prak Sokhonn in his capacity as the special envoy of the ASEAN chair, briefed the Council’s Members, in a private meeting via videoconference on 28 January 2022, on the current situation in Myanmar.

"After highlighting the extreme complexity of the situation in Myanmar and the recent political security and humanitarian development in the country, Cambodian foreign minister briefed the Council on the efforts and commitments of ASEAN in addressing the Myanmar crisis, in particular on the outcomes of the recent visit by Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen to Myanmar and the steps forward to advance the progress on the implementation of the Five-point Consensus (5PC)," according to a press release seen by Fresh News on Saturday.

"While touching on premier Hun Sen's visit to Myanmar, the ASEAN chair’s special envoy underlined the following primary aims of the visit: (1) to re-engage Nay Pyi Taw to find way forwards to implement ASEAN Five-point Consensus. Ending violence and an extending truce by all parties concerned are imperative to build trust and to create a conducive environment for inclusive dialogue; (2) to ensure that the first visit of the special envoy of the ASEAN chair to Myanmar could take place in order to facilitate mediation of the dialogue by parties directly concerned; and (3) to ensure a safe and speedy delivery of humanitarian relief to the people in most need in Myanmar."
