Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 6 – The US Embassy in Phnom Penh has responded to a question from Fresh News on Thursday (6 Jan) regarding Hun Manet’s West Point degree.

The following is the content of the US Embassy's response to Fresh News: “you should contact the specific universities for information about their degree programs.”

In October 2019, the spokesperson of the US Embassy Emily V. Zeeberg wrote in an email response to Fresh News’ question following Rainsy’s allegation over Hun Manet's fake degree issued by West Point US Military Academy.

“Graduates of US colleges, universities, or institutes of higher learning receive degrees or certifications if they meet the requirements of that institution. A student’s country of origin is not a factor.”

“The application process for international students is essentially the same as that for US citizens,” according to official website of West Point Military Academy, westpoint.edu.

“International cadets are fully assimilated into the Corps of Cadets. Their four-year experience here is identical to that of US cadets,” the website said.

In 1995, Hun Manet was one among the only seven international cadets to be admitted to West Point even though the academy recruit 10 international cadets per annum. Manet received a bachelor's degree from West Point in 1999. He also received a master of arts in economics from New York University in 2002, and a PhD from the University of Bristol in 2008.
