Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 13 - Dr. Seng Sary, a political and social analyst, wrote on his Facebook on Monday that not allowing Cambodia to resolve the crisis in Myanmar and hoping that the crisis will end itself is the foolish idea.

His statement was made in response to some critics against Cambodia's willingness to resolve the Myanmar crisis and reunify ASEAN by inviting Myanmar's leader to participate in ASEAN Summit.

The counselor of the US Department of State Derek Chollet recently urged Cambodia not to make any concessions to Myanmar's military regime.

Dr. Seng Sary said the year 2022 is the most appropriate time for Cambodia to use her successful negotiation experience to resolve the political crisis in Myanmar in behalf of chair of ASEAN.

“Refusing to allow Cambodia, as chair of ASEAN in 2022, to negotiate with Myanmar leader while expecting her political crisis to end is the most foolish idea," Sary underlined.

He also questioned whether Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen's win-win strategy, which had been successful with the Khmer Rouge regime, would be effective in the case of Myanmar's current political crisis.

Premier Hun Sen recently accepted an invitation to pay an official visit to Myanmar on 7-8 January 2022. The premier also planned to ask Myanmar’s ruling leader Min Aung Hlaing to reconsider joining ASEAN summit and related meetings in 2022 under Cambodia’s chairmanship.

Myanmar has been absent from the 2021 ASEAN summit after facing nearly a year of internal political crisis since the military-led coup on February 1.
