Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 9 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen asked international analysts whether it is wrong to reunify ASEAN member countries, speaking at the construction inspection of the new airport in Kandal’s Kandal Steung on Thursday.

The question came after the premier vowed to resolve Myanmar’s crisis and strengthen ASEAN as Cambodia assumes ASEAN chairmanship in 2022.

"Is it wrong to save ASEAN from division? The international analysts shall consider whether ASEAN should be left with 9 members, which is against the ASEAN Charter, or reunify as 10,” the premier added.

As for the crisis in Myanmar, Samdech expected positive coordination. The premier also reiterated that Myanmar has never declared its secession from ASEAN, and the ASEAN charter states that ASEAN has no rights to expel any member and that ASEAN's decision is made on the principle of consensus.

Premier Hun Sen will pay an official visit to Myanmar on 7-8 January 2022.
