Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 6 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen might visit Myanmar to ask Myanmar’s ruling leader Min Aung Hlaing to reconsider joining ASEAN summit and related meetings in 2022 under Cambodia’s chairmanship, speaking at the inauguration ceremony of National Road No. 11 and other roads in Prey Veng on Monday.

Myanmar has been absent from the 2021 ASEAN summit after facing nearly a year of internal political crisis since the military-led coup on February 1.

“The possibility of my visit to Nay Pyi Taw is high […] We do not compare general Min Aung Hlaing to Afghanistan’s Taliban, but as a member of the ASEAN community, therefore they have the rights to attend every meeting,” the premier underlined.

“We shall not bypass the principles and charter of ASEAN, and we cannot apply the United Nations’ formula in ASEAN. The structure of the United Nations is different from that of ASEAN, so the model of the United Nations cannot be used in ASEAN," he underlined.

The ASEAN charter states that ASEAN has no rights to expel any member and that ASEAN's decision is made in the spirit of consensus.
