Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 17 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen, through the Chinese ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wentian, requested Chinese president Xi Jinping and prime minister Li Keqiang to consider establishing COVID19 vaccine manufacturing companies in the kingdom.

The premier spoke during the handover ceremony of China-aided 2 million doses of Sinovac vaccine at the Phnom Penh International Airport.

"In doing so, Cambodia will be able to purchase the home-made vaccine to inoculate her people and also distribute to other countries through commercial procurement,” the premier said.

The premier hoped that the Chinese ambassador will bring his request to Chinese president Xi Jinping and prime minister Li Keqiang, as well as other relevant parties as soon as possible.

Cambodia has received more than 36 million doses of COVID19 vaccines to inoculate her people, of which China is the main supplier through donations and commercial procurement. Cambodia has so far vaccinated over 87 percent of the total population.

“We do not know when COVID19 will end, so if we are able to establish the vaccine factories here, Cambodia will be able to protect the lives of her people,” the premier underlined.

Samdech assigned the Ministry of Health to work with the Chinese ambassador as well as all relevant parties on this task.
