Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 10 – Cambodia is an important regional partner and Australia has a longstanding interest in its development, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, minister for foreign affairs and minister for women of Australia, wrote on Facebook on 9 October 2021.

“In 2022, we will celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations. This week, I spoke with deputy prime minister and foreign minister Prak Sokhonn about our development cooperation and commitment to supporting Cambodia's recovery from COVID19 including through the Mekong-Australia Partnership. We also discussed the situation in Myanmar and other regional challenges,” she said.

“Australia looks forward to supporting Cambodia as it takes on the position of ASEAN chair in 2022. ASEAN is central to our vision for a stable and prosperous Indo Pacific region with ASEAN at its centre.”

On 8 October 2021, the two ministers had a phone conversation to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional and international issues of common concern, including the recently established trilateral security partnership, “AUKUS”.
