Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 8 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen, on Friday, ordered Cambodia’s foreign affairs and justice ministers to hold talks with Cypriot counterparts in order to clarify the false report on Samdech Hun Sen’s alleged Cypriot passport.

The premier considered Cyprus and Cambodia the victims of the false reports.

“Both Cambodia and Cyprus are victims of the misleading information published by the Guardian. Although the newspaper had corrected its mistake, the two states must work together to clarify this case. If necessary, Prak Sokhonn or Koeut Rith shall meet with the Cypriot counterparts through a video conference to discuss the matter,” prime minister Hun Sen spoke Friday during the cabinet meeting at the Peace Palace.

The premier underlined that it is not a small issue when a national leader has been baselessly accused.

Samdech Hun Sen also instructed the Cambodian ambassador to Beijing to meet with Cypriot counterpart regarding this matter. According to the premier, Cambodia has sent diplomatic notes to European ambassadors to Cambodia, including the UK ambassador.

Regarding the misleading information, the Guardian newspaper has edited its article after receiving backlash from Cambodia.

On its website , the Guardian said “an earlier version incorrectly said that the Cambodian leader, Hun Sen, was among those who had received a Cypriot passport.”

The newspaper wrote in its latest version that “some members of the Cambodian leader Hun Sen's inner circle, were discovered to have been among the thousands of non-Europeans who received a Cypriot passport.”
