Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 8 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen said the law to determine a single Cambodian citizenship for the Kingdom’s top leaders will confirm that Hun Sen only holds a single Cambodian citizenship.

The law also ensures that the Kingdom’s top leaders will be loyal to the country and people; and it prevents Cambodia from foreign interferences, premier Hun Sen spoke at a cabinet meeting, held Friday at the Peace Palace.

Just two days after the premier’s initiative, the draft law on the constitutional amendment and related laws to determine a single citizenship for Cambodian top leaders have been approved by the Council of Ministers on 8 October. The draft law will be sent to the National Assembly for review.

"When the law came into force, it will affect Hun Sen's premiership,” Samdech Hun Sen addressed at the plenary session.

“If Hun Sen holds dual citizenship, he will be terminated from the office; yet if Hun Sen holds only a single Khmer nationality, he will continue to be prime minister,” Hun Sen underlined.

"In order to show loyalty to the nation and to avoid foreign interferences, the national leaders who serve as the president of the Senate, the president of the National Assembly, the prime minister, and president of the Constitutional Council must have a single Cambodian citizenship," the premier wrote on his Facebook page on Wednesday.

Prime minister’s initiative was made following a false report by “The Guardian” which incorrectly said Hun Sen was among those who had been given a Cypriot passport. The Guardian later amended its article after receiving backlash from Cambodia.
