Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 7 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen, on 6 October 2021, ordered minister of justice Koeut Rith to study the amendments of the Constitution and related laws to determine that the prime minister, the National Assembly president, the Senate president, and the Constitutional Council president must hold a single Cambodian citizenship.

The premier’s above initiative was received strong support from Cambodian people nationwide.

Cambodian National Assembly said the premier's initiative is a highly patriotic wisdom that will ensure the independence and sovereignty of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

Cambodian Senate considered that amendments will serve the noble and long-term interests of the nation by ensuring that leaders of the four institutions are loyal to the nation and the people of Cambodia; it also aims to prevent foreign interference in Cambodian internal affairs.

Cambodia’s political parties and well-known social and political analysts also expressed their support towards the premier's initiative.

Political and social analysts also voiced their support on the above initiative, while slamming the former opposition leader's distorted information.

“I understand that Cambodia’s approval of dual citizenship is good for Cambodians living abroad, but for those who want to become politicians with the status of members of the Royal Government, members of the National Assembly, senators and above must hold a single Cambodian citizenship. If they love the nation, they are not afraid to give up the foreign citizenship," said a social and political analyst In Sophal.

Another political analyst Kin Phea considered that convict Sam Rainsy's statement, alleging the premier's holding foreign passport is false.

"Is it necessary for the premier to buy a foreign passport to escape from a country to which he fought to bring peace?," Phea asked.

Cambodian netizens, particularly on Facebook, also voiced support to constitutional amendments to ensure that Cambodian top leaders only hold a single Cambodian citizenship.
