Phnom Penh (FN), Aug. 14 – The Mekong sub-region has become an important strategic location where great powers are competing for influence and leadership by establishing several initiatives with the region. This article examines the motives and interests underlying the US engagement with the region through the Lower Mekong Initiative and the Mekong-US Partnership. It argues that the US and Mekong countries will benefit from the cooperation if they honour the 3 M’s, namely mutual respect, mutual understanding, and mutual benefits.
