Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 23 – The new German Ambassador to Cambodia Christian Berger has pledged to expand cooperation and better the relations with Cambodia.

According to the ambassador, Germany also plans to open its first commerce chamber office in Cambodia to expand trade between the two countries, delegate minister Kao Kim Hourn told the press following the ambassador’s courtesy call on Prime Minister Hun Sen on Wednesday at the Peace Palace Phnom Penh.

The premier and the ambassador expressed satisfaction on good cooperation and relations between the two countries.

The premier hoped that Ambassador Christian Berger will further promote Cambodia-Germany relations to another level. He informed the ambassador that Cambodia will host the 13th Asia-Europe Summit in 2020, while Germany be the chair of the European Union. Therefore, both countries will work together for the success of Asia-Europe.

Prime Minister also thanked Germany for providing aids and trainings on delegating power to the sub-national level. He hopes Germany continues to help in this field, as Cambodia is strengthening her subnational roles.

During the meeting, Ambassador Christian thanked the Cambodian Government for her support to the German candidacy at the United Nations in the past. He also expressed interests to open the first Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia, as many German companies recognized the Cambodia’s economic growth and investment opportunity.

Prime Minister agreed with German Ambassador's view on trade and investment between the two countries. He mentioned that trade between the two countries is growing on the ground that Cambodia is importing autos and German beers from Germany, while exporting almost exclusively textiles and footwear.

Prime Minister wishes ambassador a fruitful and successful mission.

Cambodia and Germany established the diplomatic relations on 15 November 1967. Despite an interruption between 1969 and 1992, both countries remember the 50th anniversary in 2017.

It is worth noting that Ambassador Christian Berger and his spouse Maria Berger arrived Phnom Penh on 6 September 2019.

According a press release issued by Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany on Friday, the Ambassador is delightful to come to Cambodia, a country of such long and rich history. He looks forward to witness the kingdom's dynamic development and contribute to strengthening Cambodian-German friendship.

Ambassador Christian Berger had served as Ambassador to Laos and Vietnam.
