Phnom Penh (FN), July 29 – Cambodia will nominate delegate minister Kao Kim Hourn as the ASEAN Secretary-General in 2023, according to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

The premier recommended Minister of Foreign Affairs Prak Sokhonn to prepare the procedure for the nomination of H.E Kao Kim Houn, an expert on international affairs, to be Secretary-General of ASEAN in 2023 term, speaking Monday during his visit to the new stadium Morodok Techo National Stadium.

It would be the first time ever for the kingdom to receive a post of ASEAN Secretary-General in 2023 after it joined ASEAN in 1999, according to foreign affairs spokesperson Ket Sophann.

ASEAN was formally established in 1967 and at that time had no Secretariat until 1976. Its members include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The Secretary-General of ASEAN is appointed by the ASEAN Summit for a non-renewable term of office of five years, selected from among nationals of the ASEAN Member States based on alphabetical rotation.

The Secretary-General of ASEAN 2018 -2022 is H.E. Dato Lim Jock Hoi from Brunei Darussalam.
