Phnom Penh (FN), June 11 - Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn received the courtesy call from the new Malaysian Ambassador to Cambodia, Eldeen Hasaaini Binh Mohd Hashim, at the Ministry on Tuesday.

Cambodia thanked Malaysia for importing 40,000 tons of Cambodian rice in 2018; and urged Malaysia to increase rice import quota from Cambodia,” said Tuot Panha, under secretary of state of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Malaysia also pledged to provide facilitations to Cambodian workers.

Cambodia-Malaysia trade volume in 2017 was about USD 411 million, and increased to USD 474 million by 2018, according to the ministry’s report.

Minister Prak Sokhonn took note of the good progress on Cambodia-Malaysia relations and encouraged the two countries to further promote bilateral trade by signing agreement on avoidance of double taxation and promote free trade agreements under the ASEAN framework.

Cambodia–Malaysia established diplomacy on 31 August 1957. The Malaysian embassy in Phnom Penh was closed after the Khmer Rouge regime took over in 1975. It was re-opened on 26 November 1991 following the signing of the Paris Peace Accord on 23 October 1991.
