Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 19 – The Supreme Court of Cambodia upheld the sentence of former opposition leader Sam Rainsy to compensate one million dollars for defaming Prime Minister Hun Sen and pay US$2,500 as a fine to the state.

According to premier’s lawyer Ky Tech on Wednesday, the Supreme Court’s decision today includes (1) reject the counter-claim of the defendant’s lawyer, as it contradicts the law; (2) uphold the conviction of Sam Rainsy to compensate to the defendant and pay the fine to the state; and (3) announce the verdict to the public on 19 December 2018.

It is worth noting that Sam Rainsy defamed Prime Minister for bribing one million dollars to former CNRP activist Thy Sovantha to demonstrate against CNRP, speaking in a meeting in France on 14 January 2017.
