BANGKOK, Jan. 12 (Bangkok Post) - Thailand on Tuesday reported 287 new coronavirus cases, 278 of them local transmissions, bringing the total since Covid-19 first appeared in January 2020 to 10,834.

No new deaths were reported, leaving the accumulated toll at 67.

Of the 287 new cases, 153 were detected through the normal health system, 125 through active case finding and nine were quarantined arrivals.

Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said 278 new cases were local transmissions. Provinces hardest hit by the latest wave of Covid-19 were reporting more patients.

They included 51 cases in Samut Sakhon province, 31 in Bangkok, six in Ang Thong and nine in Samut Prakan.

The 125 new cases detected through active testing were all in Samut Sakhon, Dr Taweesilp said. Four were Thai and the other 121 were in the migrant community.

Samut Sakhon was full of dormitories, markets and factories, he added.

Since Dec 18, 10 provinces have logged more than 50 Covid-19 cases each. They are Samut Sakhon, Chon Buri, Rayong, Bangkok, Samut Prakan, Chanthaburi, Nonthaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Ang Thong and Pathum Thani.

People in these 10 provinces should help us contain the disease and will be screened during their inter-provincial trips,” Dr Taweesilp said.

The new wave of Covid-19 since Dec 15 has already spread to 59 provinces, while 18 remain free of it to date.

Quarantined arrival cases came from China (1), Japan (1), the United States (2), the United Arab Emirates (1), the United Kingdom (2), Indonesia (1) and India (1).

Of the total 10,834 cases, 6.732 had recovered, including 166 discharged over the previous 24 hours, and 4,035 were receiving treatment, including 28 who were seriously ill, Dr Taweesilp said. The death toll remained at 67.

Global Covid-19 case rose by 578,421 over 24 hours to 91.31 million. The worldwide death tolls went up by 9,212 to 1.95 million. The United States had the most cases at 23.14 million, up 214,683, and the most deaths at 385,249, up 1,964.
