HONG KONG, July 8 (CGTN) -- A total of six people were arrested on Sunday during clashes in Hong Kong between police officers and protesters, Hong Kong police confirmed on Monday.

According to a police statement, an organization held a public event on Sunday, from 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm local time, which was generally peaceful and orderly. One person was taken into custody for failing to produce proof of identity. Some protesters then moved to other areas and at one point, started to block roads. Police set up a cordon line and repeatedly warned the protestors as it became an unlawful assembly. As the warning failed to work, police took actions to disperse the crowd, and arrested five persons for assaulting a police officer and obstructing a police officer in the execution of duties.

"Police respect the public's freedoms of expression, speech and assembly. It is the policy of police to facilitate all peaceful public events while at the same time ensuring public safety and public order. Police strongly condemn the illegal acts of protesters for blocking the roads," said the statement.
