Phnom Penh (FN), March 24 - A new $60 million supermarket, located in Samdech Techo (60 meter road) begins its construction on Sunday.

The groundbreaking ceremony held today was presided over by Senior Minister Chea Sophara, Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, with the participation of Phnom Penh Governor Khoung Sreng, Oknha Kith Meng, President of the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce and Oknha Thai Mengly, General Director of Peng Huot Group.

The new supermarket named "PH Diamond Place", build on six hectare plot, was invested by Peng Huot Group.

Oknha Thai Mengly said the PH Diamond Place shopping mall was part of the 40-hectare development project, The Star Diamond, featuring luxurious residence, condominium developments, high office buildings, and conference/wedding halls.

He said that the supermarket has a total of 62,000 square meters with 30,000 square meters of rented space, 2,671 parking lots and 952 motorbike parking lots to be completed by 2020.

Speaking at that occasion, Senior Minister Chea Sophara stated that after liberating from Pol Pot, Cambodia had no modern shopping malls and luxurious buildings, only the destructed buildings left from war. There were only markets selling vegetables without roofs nor elevators.

Chea Sophara said that in Phnom Penh, only local markets like Tapang Market and Central Market available, which were small, difficult to access, and that rains could submerge the vehicles.

Today, no one ever thinks of the rapid development Cambodia achieved under the leadership of the Head of Royal Government of Cambodia, Samdech Hun Sen, who struggles in every circumstance to bring about the development from zero.

Chea Sophara said that the establishment of the supermarket was part of the development of the national economy, based on the potential of the local labor force and potential Cambodian students to work on the sector.

Phnom Penh has many shopping malls, such as AEON, Makro, and many more.
