Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 18 – Phay Siphan, spokesman of Royal Government of Cambodia, on Thursday, said that the request to postpone National Assembly Election by Sam Rainsy is the threat to democracy in Cambodia and oppose the rightful decision of Cambodian citizens.

The statement was made after Sam Rainsy, former president of Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP), on Wednesday, warned if the government does not postpone the election to be held on July 2018, the violence will occur and that Cambodia will not be recognized by the international community.

“The demand to postpone election and claims that Cambodia will face violence and isolation are threatening democracy and rightful decision in Cambodia without counting the interference into Cambodian internal affairs,” said Phay Siphan.

“The request is against the democracy progress. The election is held regularly and ordinarily as stipulated in the law on election. This standard has been implemented regularly for 5 mandates” he added.

Prime Minister Hun Sen, on Thursday, announced that the Senate and National Assembly elections are not subject to changes.

The premier added that “Without much explanation, I confirmed that the Senate Election will be held on February 25, 2018 and the National Assembly Election on July 29, 2018. Hopefully, the Phnom Penh Post, including the analysts, will learn how to comment and analyze more clearly”.
