Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 6 – In 2018, Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC) will clear landmines and unexplored ordnance on 147 square kilometers, which is expected to cost $20 million, according to Heng Ratana, Director General of CMAC.

Heng Ratana's statements were made at the 2017 Annual Meeting and on Friday at CMAC headquarters, with the participation of all CMAC units.

“In 2017, CMAC has achieved tremendous success by clearing landmines of more than 110 square kilometers, an equivalent to 105% of the exploration plan and destroy 40,914 bombs, equivalent to 90% of the plan, and other significant achievements, including education on the dangers of mines, searching and rescuing people with disabilities and international collaboration,” he added.

To achieve this 2018 goal, CMAC needs $20 million and the forthcoming budget is $14.6 million while CMAC is negotiating with donors for additional $5.7 million.

Heng Ratana added that this year, CMAC received more than $ 8 million grant from the Japanese government. Besides, CMAC also received the support from UNDP (Switzerland, Australia and Canada), APOPO, JMAS, NPA and the Royal Government of Cambodia.
