MANILA, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte will undertake a three-day working visit to Japan starting on Sunday, a government spokesman announced Wednesday.

Robespierre Bolivar, the spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs, said Duterte is making the visit "to further enhance these strong bilateral relations between Manila and Tokyo."

He said Duterte will discuss with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe "matters of mutual interest to both countries."

Duterte is also scheduled to meet with "other high-ranking Japanese government officials and influential captains of industry," Bolivar said.

Aside from bilateral issues in the economic, industrial, social and security arena, Bolivar said discussions are also expected to include regional developments, including peace and stability in the region, particularly in the Korean Peninsula.

Duterte cancelled his scheduled trip to Japan last June following the attack of pro-Islamic State (IS) militants in Marawi City.
