Phnom Penh (FN), October 3- The Royal Government of Cambodia received about $35 million grant from the Japanese Government for the construction of bridges and roads in flood-prone area in Kratie and Prey Veng provinces.

Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, and Hidehisa Horinouchi, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia, signed the agreement this morning.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs further added that five bridges on National Highway 73 in Kratie and two bridges on National Highway 11 in Prey Veng will be constructed to replace the existing bridges in order to expand transportation capacity.

Both Prak Sokhon and the Japanese Ambassador are optimistic that the aid will help increase transport availability, reduce time and money for transportation. It also helps promote the livelihoods of people in flood vulnerable areas.

Prak Sokhonn expressed his profound appreciation to the Government of Japan and the Japanese people for their continued support.

"The assistance provided through today's signing and the many donations provided by the Government and people of Japan have been a great contribution to the existence of infrastructure, economic development and poverty reduction," said the Cambodian minister.

Since April 2017, Cambodia has received Japan's official development assistance about $249 million, including a grant of, approximately $40 million for the development of human resources, flood protection and drainage improvement in the capital, and a loan that is worth approximately $209 million for the development of a new terminal development in Sihanoukville.
