LONDON, June 14 (Xinhua) -- A huge fire broke out at a 27-story apartment building in western London in the wee hours of Wednesday, with flames observed from the second floor to the top of the building, said the London Fire Brigade.

The tower, built in the 1970s and renovated several times, contains 120 homes. It is feared many are trapped in the building as the fire occurred during sleep time.

Police received report of the fire at the Grenfell Tower on the Lancaster West Estate at 1:16 am local time (00:16 GMT). The Metropolitan Police asked people to avoid the area on its twitter and said an evacuation of the building is underway.

Currently, there are 40 fire engines and 200 firefighters working on the scene trying to contain the massive blaze.

The London Ambulance Service said it sent "a number of resources." Reports say that two people have been treated for smoke inhalation in link with the accident.
