Siem Reap (FN), March 20 - Prime Minister Hun Sen lead China's 5th Round Table on World Trade Organization (WTO)’s accessions at the Sokha Hotel in Siem Reap.

According to a press release delivered by the Ministry of Commerce, the meeting will last for 3 days and begins March 20. The focus of the conference is "Best Practices on the Accessions of Less Developed Countries (LDCs)”.

The meeting will be conducted by the Chinese government in collaboration with the WTO and the coordinators of LDCs. The meeting aims to share knowledge and best practices to LDCs who wish to successfully become WTO members, like Cambodia and other eight LDCs.

The meeting also supports LDCs that are members of the WTO to implement Article 12 of the Marrakesh Agreement, which focuses on the decision of the annual ministerial meeting to include LDCs as a WTO member when they receive a 2/3 vote.

The agenda includes requirements to be WTO member, challenges and opportunities as well as duties as a WTO member.

Cambodia was chosen by the WTO as a coordinating leader of the LDCs, which is composed of 36 member states and 8 other country observers for 2017-2018. The decision was unanimously made on November 14, 2016 when the WTO recognized Cambodia’s trade development with an average 7 percent economic growth per annum over the last decade.

As a leading coordinator of the LDCs, Cambodia has the obligation to coordinate all 48 LDC members to take advantage of free trade and to promote the remaining prioritized actions to complete the Doha Development Agenda.
