Kompong Chhnang (FN), March 13 – The Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) on Monday was working on the removal of MK2 bombs dropped by the U.S from the Tonle Sap, a freshwater lake connected to the Mekong River, according to Heng Ratana, the director-general of CMAC.

The operation was initiated in response to the request of Tonle Sap’s fisherman after CMAC experts found out that these bombs threatened the safety of people living near the lake.

The US bombed Cambodia from 1963-1975. Further data confirms conveying 2 to 8 million tons of bombs were dropped on Cambodia with the intent to deter Vietnamese aggressors. Unfortunately, 500,000 Cambodian civilians were killed as well. The bomb also destroyed people’s residences and other infrastructure as well.
