Phnom Penh (FN), March 12 – Chum Sounry, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFA), said the ministry will investigate the case of Cambodian man sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of a Vietnamese man in Vietnam.

Lay Bun Thy, 53, a former Lieutenant Colonel and deputy head of the police post at Cambodia’s Phnom Den International Border Gate, was sentenced March 7, 2017, according to Vietnamese local news.

“We were recently notified that the Vietnamese court sentenced Lay Bun Thy to 25 years in prison. Legal experts and MoFA’s counsel are examining the case. We are not sure whether he will be extradited,” said Chum Sounry.

The indictment asserts that at about 6pm on July 16, 2016, Lay Bun Thy and six Vietnamese nationals went to a restaurant to drink in An Giang Province.

At approximately 8pm, Quang and Được invited Thy to drink with them. Thy refused, leading to an argument. Thy fired two shots at Quang, wounding him in the face.

Được, who was sitting beside Quang, stood up. Thy then shot Được in the forehead and back, as he thought Được intended to attack him.

Được died on the way to hospital while Quang only sustained serious injuries.
