Phnom Penh (FN), Feb 16 – U.S Ambassador to Cambodia, William A. Heidt met with Acting CNRP President Kem Sokha on Wednesday to discuss the current political climate in Cambodia.

“Ambassador Heidt and Acting CNRP President Kem Sokha met yesterday to discuss the latest political developments and activity in the National Assembly, including legislation being considered on political parties”, according to a U.S Embassy Facebook posting on Thursday morning.

The National Assembly plans to hold an extraordinary meeting on Feb. 20, 2017 to pass an amendment that would effectively ban any convicted politicians from running or standing as President or Vice President of a political party, as well as retaining the right to dissolve that party should the conviction be deemed serious.

The request to enact the new law by 60 of the CPP’s National Assembly members was submitted to the National Assembly last Friday.

The amendment was made at the request of Prime Minister Hun Sen during a meeting of the National Assembly on January 31, 2017.
