Phnom Penh (FN), Feb 7 – The plaintiff, Thy Sovantha and her lawyer, went to Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Tuesday to ask for an increase in compensatory damages from $250,000 to $500,000 arising from the alleged defamation caused by Sam Rainsy.

Thy Sovantha, former opposition party's supporter stated that, “The claim to raise the compensation to $500,000 has been successfully submitted to the court. If I win this case, I will use the money to develop Areng Valley.”

Thy Sovantha is suing him after Sam Rainsy alleged that Prime Minister Hun Sen bribed her $1 million to work against Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP).

Sam Rainsy was sentenced to two years imprisonment for inciting violence on Deputy Prime Minister Hor Namhong. He was also sentenced to 5 years imprisonment on December 2016 relating to forging documents on borders between Cambodia and Vietnam. Besides these sentences, Sam Rainsy is also facing other claims, mostly relating to defamation.
