DAMASCUS, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- A car bomb went off in Syria's northwestern coastal city of Latakia on Thursday, leaving nine people killed and 15 others wounded, state TV reported.

The report said that a suicide car bomber detonated his vehicle near a stadium in the city of Jableh in the countryside of Latakia.

It wasn't the first bombing to rock Jableh.

Last May, five bombings hit a hospital and a bus station in the city, killing at least 106 people.

Then, the blasts were considered the first to hit Tartus and Jableh, which have remained largely calm during the country's six-year-old conflict.

Thursday's bombing came amid a cease-fire brokered by Turkey and Russia that took effect last Friday. Both the government and rebels have accused the other of breaching the truce.
