BOGOTA, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- An airplane carrying 81 people including members of a Brazilian football team has crashed in Colombia, killing 76 people and leaving only five survivors, the Colombian police said Tuesday.

The aircraft that crashed after disappearing in Colombian airspace was carrying 72 passengers and nine crew members.

Three players from the Brazilian football team survived the crash, according to Brazilian media.

The crash site is in a mountainous area outside the Colombian city of Medellin, the destination of the chartered plane, as the Brazilian football team was expected to take part in a game Wednesday.

According to airport authorities at the scheduled destination, poor weather conditions have made the crash site difficult to reach.

It is not immediately known what caused the crash.
