Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 13 – In order to write a good News Feature article, journalists should use their own impressive arts of writing in developing delayed lead to attract readers and make the article more engaging, president of the Fresh News Training Center (FTC) Mar Yarith spoke in a training session on 11 December 2021.

News Feature is a long detailed piece of news writing that use delayed lead and it is usually used to describe major events. It requires the ability to write and describe the story in an attractive and a professional way.

“Journalist must first identify where the Delayed Lead will bring readers’ attention to. Delayed Lead can be a plot, a reminder or a short story. The lead will then bring the readers to the main plot, Nut Graph,” Yarith added.

Nut Graph tells the reader what the writer is up to; it delivers a promise of the story's content and message. After the Nut Graph part, the News Feature article will then explain the story background, followed by most important news information, supporting details, background and color.

In the past seven weeks, FTC students learned about the news value, the 5Ws and How, how to write body paragraph and conclude the news writing. Students also recently learned about News Update and Developing News.

Mar Yarith is a local veteran journalist, who has been working in the field of journalism for over 30 years. He has worked for various well-known foreign news agencies such as UPI, AP and VOA. Yarith was also the founder and co-founder to several media outlets in Cambodia. Back then, he was the only Cambodian student majoring in journalism at the University of Michigan and the University of Maryland in the United States.
