Phnom Penh (FN), August 1 – Hundreds of male and female workers have once again gathered this morning of August 1, 2016 holding placards urging that Sam Rainsy, president of the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party retract the messages that he has delivered to the European Union asking for the EU to close off its markets to Cambodian export products, Fa Saly, Chairman of the National Union Federation, told Fresh News earlier.

Fa Saly said the workers have demonstrated with the placards for three days already, since last Saturday, Sunday and today. The have been demonstrating in Phnom Penh and some other provinces namely Kampong Chhanang, Kampong Speu, Kandal and Kampong Cham.

“Hundreds of male and female workers are holding placards with the massages that urge the president of the opposition CNRP retracts his request to the EU to close off the EU market to Cambodia’s export products. The workers were worried that they would have lost their jobs, and it is not just the problem for 70,000 or 80,000 or 90,000 workers but would affect millions of workers,” Saly said.

Saly said should Sam Rainsy or any other political leaders want to help workers, there should not be any statement that would affect the garment sector. Saly also emphasized that the current actions taken by the worker unions have had nothing to do with politics and the unions are not a political springboard nor do they serve political interest of anybody.

It should be recalled that, according to a report by Radio France Internationale (RFI) the opposition leader have recently said to the EU that should the EU closes off textile market for Cambodian products, they should not reopen it without setting certain conditions and that by doing so the government would begin to take the concerns into consideration.
