Phnom Penh (FN), July 28 – After a hearing in the morning of July 28, 2016, of a legal case against the leader of the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party Sam Rainsy for defaming National Assembly president Heng Samrin, judge Ros Pisith decided a fine on the defendant of 10 million Riels ($2,500) that will go to the state coffer and another 150 million Riels ($37,500) as a damage to president Heng Samrin for public defamation under Article 305 of the Criminal Code.

The legal complaint against Sam Raimsy was lodged later in 2015 by Ky Tech, a lawyer for NA President Heng Samrin, over a charge that Rainsy had made an accusation posted on his Facebook page that former head of state of the People’s Republic of Kampuchea Heng Samrin was behind a legal sentence rendered against the then-prince Sihanouk.

The hearing was held with neither the presence of Sam Rainsy nor his lawyer and with only the attendance of Ky Tech, lawyer for NA president Heng Samrin.
