Phnom Penh (FN), July 11 – Minister of Information Khieu Kanharith, said in a Press Conference on July 11, 2016 at the Ministry of Information it is the government who has lost the most in the murder of political analyst Mr. Kem Ley.

“It is the government that has lost the most in the murder case since the government is trying to demonstrate that there is democracy, freedom of expression and free criticism. The Ministry of Information at every press freedom day tends to talk about freedom of information and freedom of expression without fear and so the murder has been seriously affecting the policy of the government as a whole. The government is therefore trying hard to shed light on the darkness,” the Minister said.

“Dr. Kem Ley was not the first person who criticized the government and the development process of Cambodian society, but there are many others. Unfortunately the tragedy has just happened when Cambodia is enjoying freedom and that’s why we are just examining the case,” added the Minister.

Referring to the recent report issued by Global Witness that strongly attacked Prime Minister Hun Sen and his family, Mr. Kanharith said Global Witness has a personal dispute with the premier and that was the motive behind Global Witness to come out with the report.

By saying that having shares in businesses is a takeover it is a serious mistake, the Information Minister said of Global Witness. “If we just have shares in businesses and then it is labeled as a takeover, I think it is a very serious mistake and deception,” Mr. Kanharith said.
