Phnom Penh (FN), June 16 – Cambodian Mine Authority, on behalf of the Cambodian government, issued a press release today, June 16, 2016 thanking the government and people of Germany for a funding support amounting to €2 million (about $1.872.531) for demining operation on the lands that are still threatened by land mines and UXO left over by the war in Cambodia.

The government of Germany has provided €2 million to Cambodian Mine Authority via Hallo Trust for a two-year operation from 2016 through 2017 which constitutes a great contribution to poverty reduction and rescuing tens of thousands of Cambodian people from the threat of land mines, the press release said.

Hallo Trust has cleared a total of 193.97 sq. km out of 5,110 landmines, 140 anti-tank mines and 5,534 UXO between 1992 and 2015, according to the press release.

It should be recalled that Prime Minister Hun Sen has made a recommendation that “The killing fields transformed into development lands” be integrated into Goal 18 of the Government’s Millennium Development Goals and demining activities have become a potential contribution to poverty reduction as well as improvement of living standard of the Cambodian people.
