PHNOM PENH (FN), June, 9 – A senior government official and spokesperson of the Council of Ministers Phay Siphan told the press this afternoon of June 9, 2016 that the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called Senior Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokonn as reported on the social media, but simply for a normal conversation.

Mr. Siphan said the Minister has already explained to Mr. Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary General, on the situation in Cambodia. “Personally, I believe that Mr. Ki-moon, as the chief of the UN, understands clearly about the situation in Cambodia, after the explanation by the minister,” Mr. Siphan said.

The spokesperson also said that the information reported on social media and some other media outlets was actually only about the contact and conversation but not on the content and the results of the conversation.

It was reported on the UN Website yesterday, June 8, 2016 that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn directly to express his concern over a number of reports on intimidation, harassment and arrests of civil society actors, media, staff and members of National Election Committee and opposition party. Mr. Ki-moon called for resumption of the culture of dialogue between the Cambodian People’s Party and the Cambodian National Rescue Party, according to the website.
