Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 13 - The Korean government recently informed the Cambodian government that she pledged to provide a 66.5 million loan, through Economic Development Cooperation Fund, to establish the University of Health Science (UHS) Teaching Hospital Project, according to Embassy of Korea’s press release Fresh News received on Saturday.

“The project is aimed at nurturing professional health workforce with good quality of education as well as providing high standard health services by establishing a 200-bed teaching hospital with cutting edge medical equipment and health information system,” the press release added.

The lack of proper teaching hospitals in Cambodia has steadily created the need for a systematic, consistent and integrated clinical training curriculum and provision of more clinical experiences with more patients for doctors in training as well as medical students.

When the UHS teaching hospital is established with the EDCF support, it will be possible to develop high quality medical professional in a systematic manner.

It is also expected that the Cambodian citizens will benefit from modern medical service through the supply and installation of advanced medical equipment and hospital information system.

The Korean government has provided a total of USD 766 million in EDCF loans to support 22 Cambodian projects since 2001.

EDCF was established by the Korean government in 1987 to promote economic exchanges with the developing world and to assist developing countries in achieving industrialization and economic stability through the provision of long-term, low-interest credit. Korea Eximbank currently manages the fund as its trustee.
