Kampot (FN), July 9 - His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni, on Monday, chaired the "National Arbor Day" in Kampot’s Tuek Chhu district, with the participation of Senate president Say Chhum, National Assembly president Heng Samrin, Minister of Royal Palace Kong Sam Ol, Minister of Interior Sar Kheng, and other members of the government, foreign ambassadors to Cambodia, and 5,000 local people.

"National Arbor Day 2018" aims to plant 12,500 of high-quality trees on a 10-hectare plot of land.

“Forest is an invaluable assets for economy, environment, history, culture, and tourism, researches, erosion prevention, biodiversity protection, and stable habitats for human beings and animals,” stated His Majesty King.

The National Arbor Day reflected the efforts of Cambodian people in preventing disaster and the loss of forests; and promoting accountability to safeguard motherland and future destiny, His Majesty underlined adding that the losses of all types of forests can cause floods, disasters, droughts, storms, and inadequate of water sources for human, animals and plants, resulting in natural imbalance, loss of wildlife and fisheries.

In the latest Arbor Day, His Majesty King urged citizens to prevent wildfire, illegal logging and hunting, and to plant as many trees as possible to restore tree coverage. The King reiterated that the citizens' participations reflects the spirit of responsibility on forest resources for the next generation.

His majesty appealed to national and international organizations and development partners to support in all forms of forest conservation, development, and reforms; and appeals to all provincial authorities and compatriots nationwide to plant trees and create "tree garden" for green and lively environment.

In 2017, Cambodia held 27 forest festivals; planted trees on more than 462 hectares of land.

"National Arbor Day" was founded in Sangkum Reastr Niyum regime literally the "community of the common people" under the leadership of King Father Norodom Sihanouk from 1950s to 1970.

"National Arbor Day" brings about great benefit to the country and reflects the economic vitality under the unity of citizens and government officials across the country in promoting tree plantations to provide useful resources to support agriculture, social welfare, and excellent environment.
